MATCH REPORT

PORT AND NA FIANNA SERVE UP FEAST OF FOOTBALL

This game took place in McCann Park Portarlington on Sunday 11th November last and it pitted Dublin 3 in a row Champions Na Fianna against Laois holders Portarlington. This game had everything, free flowing football and some controversial decisions.

Portarlington and Na Fianna both lined out as selected in the match programme. Portarlington showed 2 changes from the game against Fr Manning Gaels. Back were Adrian Phelan from america and Brendan McCann from injury.

Port opened the scoring thanks to a David Sweeney point in the 2nd minute. It took 3 more minutes for Na Fianna to open their account through a superb goal from Dessie Farrell with 5:19 gone on the clock. Port equalised with two points from McCann both in the 11th minute. Ian foley slotted over a point from a free in the 15th minute. Na Fianna continue the scoring with a point from Senan Connell. Kenneth Hoey the Portarlington no. 7 came up the field and scored a marvellous point from play in the 20th minuts. Then in the 25th minute Ian Foley rocked a fabulous goal to the back of Ivan O'Neills net. Na Fianna 2-02 Portarlington 0-04. Ian Foley and Jason Sherlock had points for Na Fianna and Graham Burke finished the half with a point for Portarlington.

HALF-TIME: NA FIANNA 2-04 PORTARLINGTON 0-05

Dessie Farrell opened the second half scoring with a point for Na Fianna straight after the restart with just 26 seconds on the clock. Jason Sherlock scored a point for Na Fianna with 2 minutes gone. Hugh Emerson opened Port's 2nd half scoring account with the point in the 6th minute. Paul Maher and Kenneth Hoey added two more points for Portarlington. Na Fianna 2-06 Portarlington 0-08. Kevin McCann and Jason Sherlock exchanged points in the 15th and 18th minutes. paul Maher added a point for Portarlington in 19th minute. Dublin inter-county stars Dessie Farrell and Jason Sherlock added two further points for Na Fianna with time ticking away. David Sweeney and Dermot O'Connor concluded the scoring with Portarlington still battling on in the closing minutes. Na Fianna so to take on Sarsfields who beat O'Hanrahans in the other Q-F. This game will take place in two weeks time.

N.B One interesting statistic from this game is the number of wides by each side Portarlington who had the majority of the play had 13 wides in the whole game while Na Fianna only had one wide in the entire game this from a Dessie Farrell kick in the final 10 minutes
